Research Test Reactors

BWX Technologies, Inc.’s (BWXT) Lynchburg, Virginia facility, home of the world’s first commercial Critical Experiment Laboratory, has been in operation for more than 60 years.

In the late 1950s, BWX Technologies also began fabricating research and test reactors for colleges, universities and national laboratories. More than two decades later, in 1981, a dedicated research test reactor fuel element facility was constructed to produce fuel elements for the Department of Energy’s laboratory program. The facility has also produced and supplied uranium targets for medical isotopes, which are highly effective in detecting and treating specific types of cancer.

Today, BWXT's Uranium Processing and Research Reactors operation is the only North American supplier of research reactor fuel elements for colleges, universities and national laboratories.
