NFS has played an important role in the development of nuclear power in the United States. NFS operates one of only two privately-owned facilities in the U.S. licensed by the Nuclear Regulator Commission to store and process highly enriched uranium (HEU). NFS has played a role in a myriad of important projects. Here are just a few:
  • Produced physics-critical fuel rods for use in the Indian Point reactor - America’s first commercial power reactor.
  • Produced HEU oxide granules for use as fuel for the McMurdo Sound reactor in Antarctica.
  • Produced low-enriched uranium (LEU) for commercial reactors in Sweden and India.
  • Produced thorium oxide grain and thorium rods for use in the breeder reactor program.
  • Produced uranium and plutonium/uranium mixed oxides for the Big Rock Point reactor and Halden reactor in Norway.
  • Producedspecialty uranium fuel for the U.S. Navy’s fleet of nuclear-powered submarines, air craft carriers and surface vessels for 30 years.
  • Perfected a proprietary process for the downblending of HEU materials, intended for use in nuclear weapons during the Cold War, into LEU material for use in commercial power reactors.
  • Developed and implemented the first decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) of a plutonium production facility by a private company.
  • Is a member of an award-winning Fernald Environmental Management Project this is years ahead of schedule in the remediation of the Fernald Feed Materials Plant, awarded a 10-year extension by DOE in 2000.
