Cooling Water System - Draining Incident at Peterborough Facility, 1160 Monaghan Rd.

20 March 2023

On Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at approximately 1:30 p.m., BWXT NEC employees discovered water leaking in a piping tunnel under the plant.  The sources included city water from the single-pass cooling water system along with parts wash water and floor wash water.  This water was intended for discharge to the sanitary sewer and was instead seeping through the concrete into the ground under Building 21 in Peterborough.  Production was shut down, and the leak was repaired on March 14th.

A secondary leak was found in the same pipe where it connected to the sewer on March 15th.  Production was again shut down until a full inspection of the pipe and repairs were made on March 16th.

All relevant authorities have been informed, and the evaluation shows no impacts on health, safety, the environment, or the community as a result of this incident.
