About NFS - More Information

Today, NFS isthe home for innovation in a myriad of fields ranging from specialty fuel manufacturing to technology development. Domestically owned and operated, NFS fully complies with stringent safety and environmental requirements established by the company, the State of Tennessee, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Located in East Tennessee within the Smoky Mountains, the site has more than 60-acres, including a 21-acre Protected Area that meets or exceeds all U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and NRC Material Control & Accountability (MC&A) and security requirements for a Category 1 Facility.

As a Category 1 fuel facilitiy, NFS is permitted to maintain Uranium-235 (U235) in any non-pyrophoric form in any enrichment. The company's license also permits use and storage of natural Uranium, depleted Uranium and natural Thorium in any form.
