Safety and Safeguards Director

Richard Freudenberger (Rich) is Director of Safety and Safeguards at Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc. in Erwin, Tennessee. In this role, Mr. Freudenberger provides executive leadership and oversight for safety programs; including criticality safety, integrated safety analyses, radiological safety and industrial safety; emergency planning; regulatory affairs; and material control and accountability at the Erwin, Tennessee facility. Rich has over 30 years of experience in the nuclear industry. He was named to his current position in December 2013.

Prior to joining NFS, Mr. Freudenberger served as Safety Assurance Manager at Duke Energy’s Oconee Nuclear Station, a position he held since 2008. He was responsible for the management of site programs and processes related to environmental health and safety, regulatory compliance, performance improvement, emergency planning and security. While assigned at the Oconee Nuclear Station he held a Senior Reactor Operator’s license and a Shift Technical Advisor certification and served as an engineering supervisor.

Previously, Mr. Freudenberger had 12 years of service in the federal government as a resident and senior resident inspector for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission at the Maine Yankee, Crystal River, and Catawba nuclear stations. A native of Standish, Maine, Freudenberger earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering from the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine.
