One of the most impressive achievements in site remediation for NFS is the innovation the company has used to remediate areas within its own facility in Erwin, Tennessee. In use since 1957, when less stringent regulations governed the storage and disposal of wastes, NFS has been proactive in remediating a burial ground and surface impoundments at the site.

The company remediated several large surface impoundments by first dewatering the pond-like impoundments and cleansing the water at its Waste Water Treatment Facility. Sludges were further processed in a giant filter press, assayed for radioactivity, then packaged and transported for disposal.

A large burial ground at the plant is currently being remediated. The wastes and soils are packaged in intermodal containers. Before the containers are loaded on rail cars for shipment to a Utah disposal facility, they are assayed to assure each container meets all regulatory standards. A unique Versatile Automated Gamma Assay System (VAGAS) was installed at NFS for both characterization and manifesting of waste packaged for shipment in 55 gallon drums, various boxes (such as B-25s) and intermodal containers. VAGAS greatly improves accuracy and reduces the time and cost of preparing intermodals for transport.
