Packaging & Shipping
Beginning with it's money-saving solutions in volume reduction and waste packaging from its own plutonium D&D project to today's packaging and shipments from Fernald and other projects, NFS personnel understand the important responsibility of safe transport.

To accomplish its own projects NFS developed the WASTEMOVER™ material Tracking System (MTS). The system is an electronic monitoring, recording, retrieval and reporting system. Waste material is tagged and tracked by bar code throughout the process. This audit trail provides validation of facility characterization, real-time MC&A, and valuable project management information. WASTEMOVER™ stores data on each waste bale generated (such as height, weight, radionuclide content, activity concentration, storage location and shipping status. The system also provides recommendations regarding packaging configuration within pre-specified parameters, and produces transportation documentation, mainfests and other site specific waste management reports.

The company has also been instrumental in the development of other important shipping technologies, such as the Versatile Automated Gamma Assay System (VAGAS). Capable of both characterization and manifesting of waste packaged for shipment in 55 gallon drums, various boxes (such as B-25s) and intermodal containers, VAGAS greatly accelerates the assay of contaminated material shipments without compromising accuracy or safety.

Super Tigers
Super Tigers (Type B Model 6400) are NRC-approved shipping containers and are ideal for the shipment of relatively small quantities of plutonium-contaminated equipment to temporary storage or permanent disposal facilities. NFS owns three of these rugged containers for lease or contract shipment for customers. The casts have successfully transported materials for DOE clients to Hanford, WA and Los Alamos National Laboratory.

NFS can arrange transportation, material handling or employee training for those interested in a smart alternative to high-cost TRU waste shipping containers.

One of the most important transportation projects involving NFS Super Tigers involved the shipment of plutonium-contaminated equipment from Pantex, TX to Los Alamos. Want to learn more?
