Packing & Shipping - More Information

NFS has processed HEU fuel worth more than $5 billion during its history. That experience, coupled with its innovative approach to waste remediation, treatment and D&D has made it an expert in waste packaging, shipping and containerization.

Today, NFS regularly ships large quantities of radioactive wastes from it's own remediation projects and for other private and government entities. The base of knowledge built from its foundation of precise Material Control and Accountability (MC&A) of HEU material easily transfers to safe and efficient waste packaging and shipping.

NFS has been involved in HEU and plutonium D&D projects involving quantities of fissile materials and from types of operations requiring stringent nuclear safety controls. A few examples of NFS experience in packaging and shipping include:

  • Over 325 Type A&B shipments of radioactive materials to and from NFS Erwin plant in the past five years.
  • Transportation of 91,000 cubic feet of dewatered, compacted low-level radioactive sludges (6,400 55-gal. drums).
  • Shipment of more than 722,000 cubic feet of low-level radioactive waste from Fernald, OH to the Nevada Test Site for disposal.
  • Processing and shipment of more than 125,000 gallons of liquid mixed waste from Fernald to Oak Ridge for disposal.
  • Shipment of UF4 to an AlliedSignal facility and uranium metal scrap materials to Manufacturing Sciences Corporation in Oak Ridge for reuse.
  • Volume reduction, packaging and shipment of 61 transuranic (TRU) gloveboxes from Argonne National Laboratory to DOE Hanford,WA.
  • Processing, packaging and transportation of 1,700 gallons of low-level mixed waste sludge from Erwin, TN to Envirocare, UT.
  • Removal, safe-packaging and transportation of 2,700 liters of highly-enriched uranyl nitrate solution from Rocky Flats, CO to the NFS site in Erwin.
  • Excavation, segregation and disposal of buried mixed radiological-medical waste from landfills at Duke University Medical Center, Emory University and Bowman Gray School of Medicine.
  • Processing, compaction, and shipment of more than 800 drums of TRU waste to Oak Ridge for interim storage from the D&D of the NFS Plutonium Mixed Oxide Fabrication Facility.

Backed by this kind of experience, NFS offers several innovative products built from NFS know how.
