NFS is helping Unicoi County Vocational School students learn valuable careers in computer science. NFS seed money and personnel investment has helped the school create a computer factory. The school purchases components for personal computers from wholesalers. Tied to their classroom instruction on computer science, students learn by hand by assembling computers. Today, the vocational school actively markets its ability to offer first-quality, made-to-order personal computers to regional businesses and to individuals. NFS is helping train a new generation of computer builders so that students can earn higher wages and offer more to today's computer age.

Tiny Unicoi County was hard pressed to fund air conditioning systems for all of its elementary schools. NFS provided seed money so that the school system could apply for Federal Education Grants to purchase air conditioners. By making classrooms comfortable during the hot days of late Spring and early Autumn, students achievement can be improved. The air conditioning can lead to alternative scheduling for the school year - thus offering an alternative for working parents and getting the most out of school facilities.

NFS is funding a pilot program in direct instruction at one Unicoi County elementary school. The direct instruction method of teaching is famous for building the achievement of students in Japan and involves a significant shift in conventional teaching methods. Begun in 2000, the pilot program is proving to be a hit among students, teachers and parents.
