From physics-critical fuel rods for use in America's first commercial reactor to fuel for exotic reactors in Antarctica, Sweden and India to fuel for important breeder reactor projects, NFS has been on the cutting edge of science.

NFS' Research and Development Division has operated a fuel development facility to evaluate fuel manufacturing processes. In the Fuel Development Facility, under DOE contracts for naval fuel material, NFS has conducted classified programs to evaluate new fuels and how best to manufacture them. Equipment was designed, installed and operated to test the processes and to improve yields, product quality, producibility and process economics.

NFS has the process know-how to create cost-effective manufacturing facilities to not just plan the work - but do the work. For example, NFS was chosen to design, build and demonstrate advanced lithium aluminate targets for the Department of Energy's (DOE) New Production Reactor (NPR) program.
