D & D - More Information

NFS' own successful D&D project involving an old plutonium mixed oxide production facility marked America's first highly automated project to be performed by a private company. The project involved an 11,000 square feet of manufacturing and laboratory facilities. The goal of the project was to restore the facilities to a "restricted" use status.

NFS designed a developed a first-of-a-kind, fully-integrated Decontamination and Volume Reduction System (DVRS) for containment, assay, decontamination, volume reduction, packaging and accountability. NFS processed over 50,000 square feet of gloveboxes and assorted equipment, removed and shipped more than 800 grams of plutonium and developed a custom, online Material Control & Accountability (MC&A) software program. All project management, planning, systems integration and operations were by NFS personnel.
NFS has also been the smart alternative for other high risk projects involving plutonium.
